the lackey

. . and elsewhere, a gentle spring breeze traveled far across a wide field of cat tails.
The hours of daylight prolonged upon the side of the earth.

A black luxury car drove carefully within the path of the field after exiting the thick set of woods looming now behind it. It rode not far until it reached the house awaiting it amongst the wide, empty space of the land.

Before long, it parked in front of it, the two German Shepherds guarding the home beginning to bark from their chains.

Not long after doing so, Colton stepped out, dressed in a dark blue suit and silver tie.
He looked around at the property while closing his door, then slipped his hand in his pocket, pulling out his sunglasses.

The hot, burning touch of the sun beat down upon the world as he put them on, breathing steadily.
He glanced at the dogs, the two still barking, and next pulled out his cell phone.

Across from him, the front door of the beautiful little white house opened up just a crack and a head peeked out. A little girl's head.

Colton dialed a number and brought the phone to his ear.
It took a moment before he heard another voice on the other end.

"Hey boss. . . I'm here. . . the house you told me to go to, sir? . . . yeah, I will, sir. . . yes, sir. . . I understand. . . ok, boss. . . bye."

He hung up and put the device back in his pocket, then looked back at the house.

He spotted the girl.

The curious youth gasped and quickly shut the door again as he began to approach.
He walked hurriedly to the entrance, slicking back his spiky dark hair, which popped right back in place.

He cleared his throat and went to knock, when the door abruptly flung open and he winced.

The girl looked at him with widened eyes. "Who are you?!"

He rose his eyebrows at her immediate interrogation. "Hello there, Ashley. Are your parents home?"

She looked reluctant. ". . . They're not. . . here right now. . . ."

He smiled. "That's fine. . . because, it's actually YOU I wanted to see."

Ashley gulped. ". . Me?"

"Yes. . ."

He knelt down a little and took his sunglasses off. ". . . . You're very special, Ashley. . . you know that?"

Ashley backed away. "H-how do you know my name?"

He chuckled as his smile widened and he tucked his sunglasses into his pocket.

"I know everything about you."

. . .

You can't save Ashley, Sarah.

You can't save anyone.

No one can.
